The complex sentence

In syntax, a sentence with an independent clause and at least one 
dependent clause (subordinating clause) is referred to as a complex 
sentence. The dependent clause is often introduced by a subordinate 
conjunction. The following words most commonly introduce dependent 
clauses.

When a dependent clause precedes the independent clause, separate 
the clauses with a comma. Example:

Before we can make a decision, we must have all the facts.

No comma is used when it is the subject of a sentence. Exampe:

Whomever you nominate will have my support.

A dependent clause occurring within a sentence must always be set 
off by commas when it interrupts the flow of the sentence. Exampe:

We can review the wording of the announcement over lunch or, if 
your time is short, over the phone.

An essential clause is necessary to the meaning of the sentence.  
Because it cannot be omitted, it should not be set off by commas.  
Exampe:

The person who used to be in Dr. Cody’s English class is now doing 
well in literature class.
